Platter's Wine Guide 2021: 4 stars

Copper Pot Pinot Noir, 2019, Thorne and Daughters

£21.95 per bottle

About this wine

Thorne and Daughters Copper Pot Pinot Noir shows notes of bright pomegranate, hibiscus and redcurrants with some underlying exotic juniper and cedar tones. The palate is juicy and lively, showing an integrated acidity and fine tannins with generous red fruit flavours. Zesty citrus, nutmeg and earthy tones come through on the dry finish.

The 2019 Pinot noir is sourced from a handful of vineyards in the Overberg region, where good soils (predominantly clay/shale and quartz/sandstone) and cool growing conditions combine to produce wonderful Pinot noir that is both rich and perfumed.  A small parcel of Pinot Noir is also sourced from the Bottelary hills near Stellenbosch.

string(578) "If Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of wines then Pinot Noir is the wine of kings. So delicate, pure, feminine and graceful, it is arguably the finest variety in the world, responsible for the great wines of Champagne and Burgundy. Temperamental, yes, and difficult to cultivate, but can any other grape offer such dimensions of flavour or intellectual gratification? I would struggle to find one stronger! Summer berry compote flavours, with redcurrant and pink petal aromas, it is often pale in the glass, yet can offer depth and vigour simply unachievable from any other grape."
