The Noon Eclipse 2018 is undoubtedly one of the best Grenache vintages we have seen. The Eclipse has an especially lovely perfume this year, combined with impressive structure. It is produced from 91% Grenache, 6% Graciano and 3% Shiraz, grown on the Winery Block, BJs Block and the Almond Block on Noon’s estate in McLaren Vale. It is more full bodied than usual and packed with flavour but the balance is excellent thanks to a high level of ripe tannins providing a firm finish. It is drinking well now and will mature very nicely over the next 10 years or more.
The grapes for Noon Eclipse are picked from three unirrigated vineyards surrounding Drew and Raegan Noon’s winery in McLaren Vale; Grenache bush vines, which were planted in 1934 and 1943, as well as Shiraz and Graciano bush vines which were planted between 1998 and 2001. Noon Eclipse, together with Noon Reserve Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon remain some of the most desirable, yet scarce wines made in Australia today.
Wine Advocate Rating: 96 points “As usual since 2011, the wine is dominated by Grenache, from vines planted in 1934 and 1943. Shiraz and Graciano from younger vines (planted 1998–2001) comprise 10–20% of the blend. The 2018 Eclipse features lovely herbal inflections and hints of apricot/stone fruit layered over ripe cherries. This open-knit, full-bodied effort adds hints of dark chocolate on the palate. Silky, long and delicious, with a softly dusty finish, it should drink well for another 10–15 years.”
