Hooiwijn Straw Wine 2021, Donkiesbaai

£21.85 per bottle

About this wine

The Donkiesbaai Hooiwijn 2021 is pale gold in colour with intense aromas of orange blossoms, apricots, litchi and candied orange peel. A luscious wine with good acidity that
lifts the palate and gives definition to complex flavours of orange marmalade, beeswax, quince and preserved cumquats, culminating in a clean, honeyed finish.

The Donkiesbaai label by Rust en Vrede, is a celebration of Donkiesbaai, the Cape West Coast home where the Engelbrecht family have had their holidays for years. The Chenin Blanc grapes for the Hooiwijn were harvested at optimal ripeness, and left on straw mats for 3 weeks to dry. This allows the sugars to concentrate and the flavour compounds to fully express themselves. The Chenin Blanc Straw wine is barrel fermented, and then matured in seasoned 500l French oak barrels for 6 months before being bottled. Only 3685 bottles were made.

Unbelievably ripe and concentrated, this is a stunning dessert wine from the Rust en Vrede team.

Alcohol: 10.32% ABV

A waxy, citrus and cream styled white variety with stunning acidity and natural balance, it can produce deeply-flavoured wines from dry through to botrytis-affected sweet styles. It is a natural in every sense and in the hands of the greatest growers in South Africa shows the shimmering potential of the Rainbow Nation on the world stage."
