Old Vines White Blend 2020, Mullineux

£24.95 per bottle

About this wine

The Swartland is blessed with an abundance of old vine Chenin which is used as the backbone of the Mullineux Old Vines White Blend.  Several small parcels of Mediterranean varieties (17.5% Clairette Blanche, 5.2% Grenache Blanc, 4% Viognier, 4.7% Semillon Gris, and 3.1% Verdelho) are added to the blend  for complexity, balance and aromatic lift. The grapes come from vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland:  the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg,  the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg and the rolling, iron-rich hills west of Malmesbury.  Fermentation is in barrel with indigenous yeasts and the wine is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels (20% new)

The 2020 is a floral and fragrant wine with crushed stones, blanched cinnamon and an enticing nectarine and flinty focus. The full, layered palate is balanced by a vibrant acidity and flavours of yellow grapefruit and hints of aromatic spice.

Ageing potential: Best served at 10 to 12 °C, this wine will show optimally when decanted in the first 3 years after bottling.

Alcohol: 14% ABV

Neal Martin for Vinous.com (Jul 2021): 90+ points “The 2020 White Old Vines has a minimalist bouquet that offers fleeting glimpses of citrus peel and beeswax, although I would have liked a little more Chenin character to come through. The palate is well balanced with a lovely texture and hints of brioche and walnut. A subtle lemongrass note emerges toward the finish. Give this 2–3 years in bottle for the aromatics to develop. Drink 2023 – 2035”

James Suckling for Jamessuckling.com (Nov 2021): 92 points “This has a ripe and complex nose of cooked lemon, apricot, papaya, shortcrust pastry, chamomile, juniper berries and roasted hazelnuts. It’s full-bodied, round and oily, yet fresh. Flavorful marriage of spiced fruit, flowers and nuts. 66% chenin blanc, 18% clairette blanche, 5% grenache blanc, 4% semillon, 4% viognier and 3% verdelho. Unfiltered. Drink now.”

A waxy, citrus and cream styled white variety with stunning acidity and natural balance, it can produce deeply-flavoured wines from dry through to botrytis-affected sweet styles. It is a natural in every sense and in the hands of the greatest growers in South Africa shows the shimmering potential of the Rainbow Nation on the world stage."
