Surely an anomaly – from Australia’s ‘fruit basket’ comes one of the most characterful Pinot Noirs that money can buy. In this taster’s mind it is the variety which sets Trentham apart from any of their neighbours. How they retain such freshness and vivacity in the glass is truly admirable and undoubtedly played a big part in the Estate’s recent 5 star recognition from James Halliday. Classic hints of morello cherry and delicate pink and purple petals lift from the glass and lead to a palate of crunchy, understated but beautifully ripe fruit. Light on the palate but mouthfilling and so satisfying. Grand Cru Burgundy this is not, but blink and for just a moment you could be in Chambolle-Musigny… in a really great vintage! This is terrific Pinot Noir.
