Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole Vineyards with the first plantings in 1985. The fruit is sourced from some of the oldest producing Sangiovese vines in Australia with the 2018 vintage being Coriole’s 32nd consecutive Sangiovese release. Typical of the 2018 vintage this release shows bright, red fruit and lifted florals. The beguiling, Pinot-esque nose is loaded with aromas of earthy, forest floor, mace, anise, cassia bark and juniper berry. The creamy, delicate palate shows wild strawberry, cherry, raspberry, foraged mushrooms and an enticing creme brulee torched toffee character. The tannins are fine, feathery and have classic firm, Sangiovese length.
“Deep red-purple colour, bright and young. The bouquet is very fresh and bright and loaded with fresh dark berry aromas, a tickle of star anise and a hint of dried herb and mixed spice. A lovely spectrum of aroma and flavour, the firm tannin spine perfectly balanced and running the length of the palate. Very long. Outstanding wine, a classic in the making. 96 points”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review
“A bold array of ripe cherries here with some subtly earthy and woody notes that add interest early on. The palate is juicy, succulent and has medium body. Just the way it should be. Very drinkable now. 92 points”
“Vibrant in the glass with youthful hue. Cherry cola nose with primary fruits dominating. Subtle oak spice adds to the complexity along with a herbaceous lift on the nose. The palate is cool and although opulent with sweet notes is contained by linear acid and prominent youthful tannins. The latter has a graphite edge which engages. The finish is long. New world sangiovese with a juicy core that commands attention. Line and length balanced with great intensity and complexity.”
“This year in this column I reviewed the 2017 vintage of this wine glowingly. The 2018 is, if anything, even better: really juicy red and black cherry fruit with a hint of pot-pourri perfume held together with fine, elegant, savoury tannins that carry the wine beautifully along the tongue. A wine for both drinking now with relish and for putting away: this vintage will provide great pleasure for the next 10 years at least.”
