The Paul Cluver Seven Flags Chardonnay 2017 is a great expression of what both Elgin and the the Paul Cluver Estate can produce. Just like its Pinot Noir partner, the Paul Cluver Seven Flags Chardonnay undergoes both vineyard and barrel selection, in a quest by Paul Cluver to create the ultimate expression of the variety. The nose is a melody of fresh citrus fruit with some winter melon and hints of oak in the background, whilst the palate is an exciting combination of citrus fruit with great poise and concentration. A delicious wine with a very long and elegant finish.
Delicious.‘Burgundian Martin Prieur consults on this world class Chardonnay, aged in one third new oak and combining laser-like acidity with aromatic oak, savoury undertones, lovely weight and remarkable precision and palate length. Brilliant winemaking. 2019-25.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
‘The 2017 Seven Flags Chardonnay was matured in French oak barrels for nine months using 31% new oak, the rest second- and third-fill. The nose is a little more closed than the Estate Chardonnay at this early juncture, although there is a brooding intensity here. This is well defined, displaying hints of dried honey and white peach with aeration. The palate is fresh and crisp with hints of Golden Delicious and orange peel, the oak very well integrated and with an almost Meursault-like, nutty finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Excellent.’ – Neal Martin Report 2018, 93/100
