Pike’s greatest statement of Riesling is the single vineyard ‘Merle’ bottling. In a moment of genius Neil and Andrew Pike decided to bottle separately a particular plot of their vineyard which continually produced superior juice. The Merle was born and with it has come some fabulous critical reviews. Lifted aromas of crushed lime leaf and citrus blossom at first, followed up by slatey/flinty notes and a hint of stone fruit. The palate is crisp, dry and slightly talcy/slatey, but has enough fruit concentration to keep it all in balance. The citrus/lime characters emerge as the wine opens up with air and seem to go on and on forever. Another very good vintage of “The Merle”. It will certainly appeal immediately to those who like fresh, young Rieslings, but for those who like a little more complexity of bottle aged Riesling, cellaring for 7 -12 + years is recommended. This is a genuinely great wine!
