Steenberg

Steenberg is the Cape’s first registered farm established in 1682 and has come a long way from its humble beginnings.  Just 20 minutes from the bustling heart of Cape Town, Steenberg is a haven of tranquillity steeped in heritage and feels a million miles from the world.

Located in the idyllic cool-climate Constantia Valley, Steenberg produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cap Classique in South Africa, along with other celebrated wines.

It is Steenberg’s distinctive terroir which inspires wines with a strong sense of place, and which encapsulates the heritage of Steenberg.

At the southernmost point of the Constantia Wine Route, extensive Steenberg estate elegantly combines tradition and modernity.  Upmarket residences and a visually spectacular and technically challenging 18 hole golf course encircle the luxury 5-Star Steenberg Hotel, which in turn centres on the 17th century original manor house, that has been lovingly restored and declared a Provincial Heritage Site.

The mountainside winery, owned (with the hotel) by Graham Beck, houses the Tasting Room / Cellar Door where you can taste Steenberg’s award-winning wines, modern art including a dazzling ‘grape pip’ chandelier, one of the two restaurants on the estate, plus the cellar, where Elunda Basson completed her first harvest at the helm, adding a fresh perspective to the bubbles (her speciality) and other ranges.

Replanting of the vineyards continues apace, and the wine team is increasingly moving towards more environmentally considerate practices aimed at preserving the decomposed granite soils, so important for the classic, mineral-seamed wines.
