Description
Stellenbosch property Meerlust celebrates 50 years of bottling under its own label this year.
Though viticulture began here in 1693, the first Meerlust wine – Cabernet Sauvignon – was made only in 1975 by Nico Myburgh, seventh-generation owner and father of current owner, Hannes. This marked Meerlust’s shift from bulk production using high-yielding varieties to a focus on premium winemaking.
To mark the anniversary, Meerlust has released the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon under a special commemorative label.
Matured for 18 months in barrel, 50% new, the nose is immediately engaging – red and black berries to the fore, with rose, the faintest touch of leafiness, cigar box, vanilla, pencil shavings and oak spice lending further complexity. The palate shows excellent fruit purity, vivid acidity and fine, supple tannins. There’s impressive volume and texture despite a modest alcohol of 13.5%, the finish elegant rather than assertive – long, but not overly dry or grippy.
The exceptional 2021 vintage was awarded 95 points by Tim Atkin MW, and makes for a wine worth cellaring for up to 20 years.
Food pairing: Roast meat and game. Ideally served at 18ºC – 20ºC.
Ageing potential: 10 – 15 years, provided wine is stored in ideal cellar conditions.
Alcohol: 13.5 % ABV
