Te Rehua Pinot Noir 2020, Escarpment

About this wine

One of Escarpment’s ‘Insight Series’ single vineyard releases, Te Rehua is unquestionably the most luxurious and plush on the palate.  This wine was grown on the Barton Vineyard, Huangarua Road, Martinborough from vines 28 years old. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for, and a blend of many clones grown in a very sheltered spot always rewards us with a classic example of New World Pinot Noir. Hand harvested fruit was open top fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 22 days. After pressing it was matured in 40% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was fined to protect the flavours and aid brightness in the glass. Bottled without filtration, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. It has a unique site derived complexity and texture combined with black cherry/plum fruit flavours.

Food pairing: A wonderful counterpart to any game dishes.

Ageing potential: It will continue to develop for up to 10 years.

Alcohol: 13.4% ABV

string(578) "If Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of wines then Pinot Noir is the wine of kings. So delicate, pure, feminine and graceful, it is arguably the finest variety in the world, responsible for the great wines of Champagne and Burgundy. Temperamental, yes, and difficult to cultivate, but can any other grape offer such dimensions of flavour or intellectual gratification? I would struggle to find one stronger! Summer berry compote flavours, with redcurrant and pink petal aromas, it is often pale in the glass, yet can offer depth and vigour simply unachievable from any other grape."
