The 2015 Chakalaka consists of 6 grape varieties (46% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 13% Mourvèdre, 10% Tannat, 8% Petite Sirah and 8% Grenache) blended to produce an expressive wine with good flavour profile. The wine shows aromas of clove and subtle white pepper followed by plum and hints of elegant spice coupled with a luscious and rich palate followed by smooth, integrated oak and well balanced tannins. A bold wine like this can hold up to the flavours of slow-roasted meat (lovely with barbequed pork) and Asian cuisine, such as plum sauce, will add to the fruitiness in the wine.
Chakalaka, a Zulu word that implies togetherness, refers to a truly South African blend of spices, used to add flavour to local dishes. A reflection of the “Rainbow Nation”, this wine is inspired by the cultural diversity of which Spice Route are justly proud. Traditional practices in the vineyards and a delicate hand in the cellar craft the Spice Route Chakalaka blend: a sum of many parts selected for their ability to express the soils of the Swartland wine region harmoniously.
