Description
Kaapzicht’s The 1947 Chenin Blanc is one of South Africa’s greatest expressions of Chenin Blanc from a vineyard planted in 1947, making it the second oldest Chenin vineyard in South Africa. From 76 year old vines, the 2022 vintage shows super complex and spicy aromatics with lovely nuances of wet straw, dusty white citrus, honeyed yellow peaches, fynbos and sweet pineapple confit. There is focused depth, full bodied plump texture and complexity with nuances of tangerine peel, clementine pulp and lychee.
The grapes are harvested from the second oldest registered heritage vineyard. Handpicked, 50% whole-bunch pressed, 50% crushed and destemmed (with skin-contact in press). Natural sedimentation overnight after pressing (light and gentle pressing with maximum pressure of 0.8 kPA). After settling, the wine is racked to 500L barrels for spontaneous fermentation. Fermentation can last between 2 – 4 weeks. The wine is aged in barrel for 10 months prior to bottling and bottled unfiltered and unfined.
The wine is bottled in the beginning of November each year and released in June. Each year this vineyard yields enough to produce 1, 800 bottles per annum, of which 50% is allocated for the export market.
Ageing potential: Drink now and over the next 10 – 15 years.
