Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Wines ideal for Father’s Day

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday 16th June 2019, the perfect day for Dad to enjoy The Old Man’s Blend wines from Groote Post: Serious Wines at Seriously Good Prices!

The Old Man’s Blend range came into being in 2001 at the behest of Groote Post’s ‘Old Man’, Peter Pentz, who asked the family to blend him a red wine to enjoy as his winter evening tipple. The enormous popularity of The Old Man’s Blend Red established a Groote Post tradition, with The Old Man’s Blend White subsequently added to the range.

Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend White 2017
This wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Semillon. The varietals are vinified separately, then blended in different ratios until the blend meets The Old Man’s approval. Displaying gorgeous tropical fruit notes, a fresh lively acidity livens the palate and lovely guava and green apple flavours linger on the finish.

Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Red 2017
This wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc. During the winemaking and wood maturation, the cultivars are kept apart, and The Old Man takes part in rigorous tasting sessions to decide on the final blend. This is a down-to-earth, ripe-fruit-driven blend. Cherry, mulberry and cedar wood are prominent on the nose with soft tannins on the palate giving a smooth finish.

Happy International Viognier Day!

Happy International Viognier Day! Today we celebrate the unique and complex character of this beautiful white grape variety. With its floral, fruity aromas and flavours, it makes for a standout choice for those seeking a refreshing and aromatic wine.

At Frontier Fine Wines one of our favourite Viognier’s is the Philip Shaw The Dreamer from Australia.  Lighter in style than many Viogniers with notes of fresh apricots and violets on the nose and lifts of lemon. The palate is bright and fresh with vivid acid and juicy fruit. The balance of fruit and acid give the wine wonderful depth and vibrancy.  Harvested early for high acidity and lower alcohol at only 10% ABV

Decanter Magazine (June 2022 Edition) – Tina Gellie “Viognier can be oily and heavy, but this one, from Shaw’s Koomooloo vineyard on volcanic soils at 900m – one of the highest in Australia – is a revelation. Gorgeous notes of apricot juice, lychee, aniseed and fennel fond on a breezy palate with punchy, fresh orange juice acidity. A cracking-value lunch wine – and the low alcohol means you don’t have to stop at one glass”

IWSC White Wine Producer Trophy Awarded to Jordan Wine Estate

At the 2022 International Wine & Spirit Competition Annual Awards Banquet, held at London’s iconic Roundhouse on the 29th of September, Jordan Wine Estate was awarded the trophy for the White Wine Producer of the Year.

Jordan was one of five wineries shortlisted for the White Wine Producer Trophy together with producers from France, New Zealand and Germany, each with outstanding achievements.

The estate performed well in this year’s IWSC awards, but it was their Chardonnay that stole the show. Their Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2020 garnered an impressive 95 points / Gold Medal, while their Nine Yards Chardonnay 2020 scored 96 points / Gold Medal. The Nine Yards comes from an east-facing vineyard, which enjoy cooler morning sun and the judges were struck by the “dazzlingly aromatic nose”. Overall, they deemed it to be: “A wonderful wine of superb quality.”

This year the Jordan family celebrates 40 years since Ted Jordan purchased Jordan Wine Estate and the hard work of the past 4 decades is evident in their other recent accolades. Jordan has also been awarded a gold medal for the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon at this year’s IWSC competition. A four-time winner of the Chardonnay Trophy, as well as the Blended Red Wine Trophy, Jordan has also previously received the Trophy for the South African Wine Producer-of-the-Year.

Gary and Kathy Jordan are the husband-and-wife team behind this 164-hectare Stellenbosch wine estate. They have been making wines in this beautiful part of South Africa’s Western Cape since their first harvest in 1993.

“We hold the IWSC competition in high regard as one of the best international wine competitions and so we are thrilled to have received this coveted trophy for the best white wine of the competition. Cool hillside slopes within sight of the sea, an understanding of our ancient soils and a dedicated team working closely together ensures that the best estate-grown Stellenbosch grapes are brought into the Jordan cellar”, says Gary Jordan

“Jordan is well known for producing top-quality Chardonnay. We make several styles of which our Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is a classic example of this noble variety, with the Nine Yards Chardonnay expressing the complexity of the terroir from one of our oldest vineyards at Jordan. What makes it special is the fact that it is an east-facing vineyard on a geological fault where the white quartz pebbles provide high light reflection on the surface of the vineyard and help to ripen the grapes slowly and evenly” – Kathy Jordan.

“Consistently awarded across a range of varieties matched to both soil and aspect, Jordan is proud to receive this IWSC trophy on behalf of our vineyard and winemaking team as we strive to find the ultimate synergy between soul and soil. As the first producer to plant Assyrtiko in South Africa, we constantly search for texture and structure in all our wines, with fermentation in barrel, tank and amphorae enabling us to express the purest varietal flavours” – Sjaak Nelson, Winemaker at Jordan for 23 years.

North, south, east and west – their vineyards cover all aspects of the compass and range in height from 160 to 410 metres above sea level. The majority of plantings here are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin for the white varieties and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz for the red. Each site is harvested with a view to capturing the unique terroir given by the vineyard’s aspect, altitude and soil.

The estate is bursting with new ideas and innovations. In the past three years, the team has started experimenting with clay amphorae for their Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Assyrtiko and Syrah. “It captures the purity of fruit while preserving acidity and the perception of minerality which we enjoy in our wines,” they say.

In 2022, they introduced a new basket press to enable them to make wine from smaller parcels. In addition to the usual 225 and 228-litre barrels, they’re introducing new larger barrels to the wood regime. In the vineyard, Gary and Kathy have introduced new varietals, such as Assyrtiko, planted on a newly acquired north-facing parcel.

In contrast to the new, they are also focused on protecting the old: the estate is a member of the Old Vine Project, preserving the oldest vines which were planted decades ago. “We recognise that age in vines brings an intensity, a perceived freshness, a texture and a sense of place that our customers enjoy,” they say.

International Wine Challenge 2022 announces award-winning wines from around the world

The International Wine Challenge, the world’s most influential, impartial and rigorously judged wine competition, has announced the results of its 2022 competition, with medals being awarded to wine producing countries across the globe, from Spain and New Zealand to India and Georgia.

Thousands of wines from over 50 countries entered the competition which was judged by an international panel of wine experts in a series of rigorous blind tastings held in London last month.

The full list of medal and trophy winners in the 2022 International Wine Challenge can be viewed here.

New Zealand back on top with the grape that made it famous
After being pipped to the post for two years running, New Zealand reclaimed the International Sauvignon Blanc Trophy this year, with Yealands Estate Single Block S1 Sauvignon Blanc 2021 scooping the prize. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc shone in this year’s Challenge, winning three of the five Gold Medals that went to wines made from this grape variety.

New Zealand was also recognised for its world-class Chardonnay, being awarded the International Chardonnay Trophy for the very first time, a category that has traditionally been dominated by French wines.

‘In this year’s results, more than 20 countries were recognised for their Sauvignon Blanc wines and so competition for this trophy is becoming increasingly stiff. New Zealand winemakers will be particularly pleased with the results this year, having lost out to Austria last year and South Africa the year before,’ explained IWC Co-chair Tim Atkin MW.

Australian Grenache makes history
Australia was awarded an impressive 54 Gold Medals in this year’s competition, coming second only to France.

South Australian producer, Pinnacle Drinks won the International Grenache Trophy for its The Ethereal One Fleurieu Grenache 2020 – the first time in IWC history that an Australian wine has won this accolade.

Meanwhile, Tasmania burnished its reputation as one of the nation’s leading wine producing regions with the Australian Sparkling Trophy once again awarded to the House of Arras, for its EJ Carr Late Disgorged 2006.  The region has now triumphed in this category for every one of the last ten years.

The Australian White Trophy also went to a Tasmanian producer, with Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 2020 also claiming both the Australian and Tasmanian Chardonnay Trophies.

International Wine Challenge Co-chair, Jamie Goode, explains, ‘Globally, Grenache is one of the most widely planted red grape varieties but it has not always been popular in Australia. In recent years, it has experienced a resurgence thanks to winemakers switching their focus towards lighter styles which are becoming increasingly sought after worldwide. It is great to see Australia take the trophy for the first time this year.’

Kanonkop hosts landmark vertical ‘Black Label’ Pinotage tasting in London

On Tuesday 10th May 2022, Frontier Fine Wines was privileged enough to attend Kanonkop’s landmark vertical tasting of their renowned Black Label Pinotage in London at 67 Pall Mall.

This is the first time that these wines have ever been tasted together, and provided those attending the unique opportunity to appreciate the evolution of this world-class Pinotage as it ages.

Starting with the 2006, the first vintage ever produced, the tasting progressed through to the latest vintage, the 2019.  It is only as they age do you see the real characteristics of this Pinotage and the sense of place and identity from grapes grown on some of the oldest soils in the world in Stellenbosch.

The fourth generation owners of the estate, brothers Paul and Johann Krige, began with an introduction to the estate before handing over to winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, who gave an insight into this variety and his winemaking techniques. Beeslaar joined Kanonkop in 2002 and has overseen the production of all ten vintages of the Black Label Pinotage.

Abrie Beeslaar: ‘I am given total winemaking freedom… as Kanonkop’s Black Label Pinotage is a wine created from the soils up and not in the boardroom. I am a firm believer that the soils, the climate and the topography will have the ultimate say in how the wine from a specific vintage will taste.’

The grapes for Black Label originate solely from one block of old vines on the Kanonkop Estate which were planted in 1953.  Once in the winery the wine is matured in new French oak barrels from 18-24 months, this extended maturation giving the wines their finesse, structure and concentrated flavours.  Only 7,000 bottles of this wine is produced each year and is consistently seen at the top of the lists compiled by critics, judges, collectors and buyers.

Golden Amrita – Nectar of the Gods

Amrita is an ancient Indian word meaning “Nectar of the Gods” , a drink that bestowed immortality.

The spotlight this month is on one of our newest wineries, Golden Amrita, a family owned company owned by the Liu family that for many generations has produced the finest quality aged Pu’er vintage teas in Yunnan province in Southern China

The Liu family reside in both Adelaide and Yunnan Province, and this interest in high quality products led them to the purchase in 2017 of a small estate vineyard situated in the Greenock sub-region of the Barossa Valley.

Being considered one of the finest tea producers from the Yunnan province, the Liu family understand the importance on quality in all aspects of production, and aim to build from the bottom up, a quality brand from the highest quality grapes, reputation and provenance.  Pu’er tea is a very distinctive, richly flavoured tea and the family see synergies with this in the richer style of Barossa Shiraz.

The vineyard is expertly managed for Golden Amrita by a sixth generation family of Barossa vignerons, the Kalleske family.  Nathan Kalleske and his sons were managing the vineyard when the Liu family purchased it from the previous owners. With the new focus on quality over volume, yields have been reduced, foliage wire added, and no herbicides are now used for weed control, only mechanical tilling. In 2019 Nathan’s brother Shawn Kalleske (a highly experienced Barossa winemaker who owns Laughing Jack Winery) met the family and agreed to take over their winemaking.

In mid- 2020 the family approached renowned Barossa winemaker Kym Milne (MW) about working with the Kalleske family to oversee the project, assisting with blending and general wine advice. After meeting with the family, visiting the vineyard and tasting the wines Kym was so impressed by the Liu family’s dedication and aspirations, he agreed to join the project.

The result is a magnificent Single Estate Shiraz from the best 20 year old Australian Shiraz vines on a single vineyard estate.

Stellenbosch – The ‘Kingdom of Cabernet’

Today, the 2nd of September, the wine world celebrates the undisputed king of red varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon – the most widely planted red grape variety in the world.

To celebrate International Cabernet Sauvignon Day, we have focused our attention on Cabernet Sauvignon specifically from the Stellenbosch region in South Africa and to highlight the Stellenbosch Cabernet CollectiveA collective of Stellenbosch wine producers to whom quality is paramount.

The story of the Stellenbosch Cabernet Collective begins with a tale of passion and creativity. Rising out of an alluring landscape, rich history, vibrant culture and unparalleled architecture, Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s most prominent wine producing regions and desirable tourist destinations. Today, the region has become the focus of many profoundly adept oenologists and agronomists who use their unique premium local African terroir to produce top quality Cabernet among other wines.

A love for country, community and producing fine wine has given rise to a collaborative group of 35 members that desire to see this regions Cabernet Sauvignons performing against the best on a global platform.

About the Region

Stellenbosch is classified as a Wine of Origin region, is home to more than a third of the Cape’s wineries and has the largest vineyard area under Cabernet Sauvignon in South Africa.  Stellenbosch is divided into 5 sub-wards namely Stellenbosch Berg, Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Valley, Bottelary Hills and Helderberg. Each ward is differentiated by soil types, aspect and area. This allows the wines of Stellenbosch great diversity but each with a commonality from whence they came.

Soils

The area of Stellenbosch, because of its diverse variety of terroir, has fondly become known in South Africa as the ‘Kingdom of Cabernet’. Due its array of soil types, which amounts to as many 50 different types, winemakers in this region have been able to produce some of South Africa’s top Cabernet examples.  The ancient soils in Stellenbosch are acidic with decomposed granite and shale in the mountainside vineyards, interlaced with alluvial deposits in the valley floors.  The soils in this region are well drained and are comparatively able to retain the right amount of water needed for the vines to thrive. These factors make for an ideal medium in which to grow Cabernet Sauvignon.  The heat retaining capacity of the warm soils in Stellenbosch are also of paramount importance as temperature plays an important role in ripening the grapes. While Cabernet is definitely produced using a wide variety of soils, it has been said that many people enjoy the minerality of Cabernets produced from the more granite based mountainous areas in Stellenbosch.  The soils in this region, among other factors, have allowed winemakers to produce Cabernet in a uniquely African way. Although South Africa is classified as a New World wine producer, stylistically the wines have an old world character; they are more austere, with dry tannins and a slightly herbaceous character.

Climate

The climate in Stellenbosch is most certainly one of the most important contributing factors to the growth of noble wine cultivars. The cooler, wet winters and the dry, hot summers in Stellenbosch are characteristic of a Mediterranean climate.  The characteristic thick skin of Cabernet is indicative of a grape that ripens comparatively late in the year compared to other varietals. The warm climate and daylight hours, approximately 14 hours in summer and 10 hours in winter, in Stellenbosch is therefore paramount to the growth process of the Cabernet grapes which would otherwise not be able to reach their optimal ripeness.  The average temperature in Stellenbosch is 16.4 degrees with temperatures reaching the mid-high 20s during the summer months. Although the vines struggle in extremely hot temperatures, the maritime climate with close proximity to the Indian and Atlantic oceans means that cool prevailing South Easterly wind allows the vineyards some relief from the hot weather during the summer months. These winds also inhibit the development of disease in the vineyards.  With an annual rainfall of between 600mm – 800mm, Stellenbosch vineyards receive plenty of rain. The good annual rainfall means that while there might not be sufficient rains during the summer periods, winemakers are able to store excess water for irrigation when necessary.  In essence, the combination of maritime influences such as ocean breezes and coastal fogs, coupled with a warm Mediterranean climate, makes Stellenbosch one of the most ideal places to cultivate Cabernet with a unique and complex character.

Aspect

The majestic mountains and undulating rolling hills in Stellenbosch are not only a portrayal of its beauty, but are important factors in cultivating the vines that grow here. The hills in Stellenbosch are not steep, meaning that farmers can plant vines in rows up to the top, some of which are as high as 250m above sea level. Stellenbosch lies in a mountainous valley with an average elevation of 136m above sea level. The Stellenbosch mountain is South of the area, whilst the Jonkershoek, Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains are in the East and Southeast. The highest point of elevation is Victoria Peak at 1590m.

Cabernet Clones

Various Cabernet clones are planted in Stellenbosch with the most common being CS 46 for its consistent good quality. Other clones used are CS336/337 , CS 37, CS 338, CS 359/360, and the less yielding CS 169. Clone planting depends greatly on sites and soil types as well as personal preference. In South Africa almost all of the vineyards are grafted onto root stocks due to the presence of phylloxera which was discovered in the Cape in 1880.

“If you haven’t already discovered Stellenbosch Cabernet, its time to seek some out and experience it for yourself” – Anthony Mueller, The Wine Advocate

“Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc is blessed with some of the finest and most suitable terroir anywhere in the world” – Greg Sherwood MW

Celebrate 50 years of Cap Classique

2021 sees Cap Classique celebrate 50 years of producing South Africa’s leading sparkling wine – a milestone in the country’s proud 360-year winemaking history.

What are Cap Classique wines and why are they special?

South Africa’s premium Cap Classique sparkling wines have been bottle-fermented and crafted in the Méthode Champenoise, producing wines which rival Champagne in quality.  The wines are predominantly produced using two of Champagne’s principal grape varieties – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  However, they don’t carry the price tag of the world’s top sparkling wines and therefore present amazing value, so everyone can find a bottle to fit their budget.

Do Cap Classique wines come in different styles?

Perfected by time, Cap Classique wines spend a minimum of 12 months on the lees giving the wines real depth and complexity with the ultra-premium prestige wines ageing for 3+ years on the lees.  Whatever your sparkling wine preference, there will be a bottle to suit you as they range from the very dry (Ultra Brut / Brut Nature) to the dry (Brut) to sweeter end of the scale (the Demi-Secs now commonly known as ‘Nectar’).

When is the best time to drink Cap Classique wines?

Cap Classique encapsulates everything the South Africans love – experiencing great moments with friends and family with good food and a glass in hand.  In South Africa these wines are not saved for special occasions but enjoyed whenever the time feels right.  Now, more than at any other time, we need no excuse to open a bottle of something delicious as we start sharing special moments together again.

This year promises to be the summer of the picnic and there are few nations on earth who enjoy the great outdoors more than the South Africans so now it’s time to channel the South African spirit.  Whether you are planning a laid-back lunch or a gourmet extravaganza a bottle of Cap Classique will elevate your picnic to something special.

How to match Cap Classique wines with food?

These wines can be enjoyed on their own but the versatility of Cap Classique’s many styles and complex flavours shout out for a food pairing.  Everyone has their own preferences and one of the many pleasures of enjoying wine is finding your own perfect matches.  However, a few great picnic pairings are suggested below…

The citric notes in the Blanc de Blancs (made exclusively from Chardonnay) are a classic pairing with seafood or creamy cheeses such as camembert

Try the seriously food-friendly rosés matched with roast lamb or a stronger-flavoured fish such as salmon on the barbeque.

Vegetarian dishes containing the earthiness of mushrooms go brilliantly with a Blanc de Noirs (a white sparkling wine made with red grapes such as Pinot Noir)

A classic cuvée can take centre stage with cold chicken drumsticks or oily fish such as smoked salmon.

No meal is complete without pudding and one of the sweet styles such as the demi-sec (Nectar) is a great match for something chocolatey or a fruit-based dessert.
